Carson’s comments offend shooting witness

by Sarah Rodriguez

Matthew Downing, an 18-year-old survivor of the recent college shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, criticized presidential candidate and self-proclaimed Christian Ben Carson’s comments about the event. Carson said if he were in such a precarious situation, he would have tried to get people to attack the shooter instead of just standing there. Downing responded to Carson’s remarks saying on Facebook it is impossible to know how someone would act until they have lived through the situation. Carson said he was not judging the victims of the Oregon shooting. The 18-year-old survivor was deemed the “lucky one” as the shooter spared his life so that he could give a flash drive to the police. Downing witnessed Christopher Harper-Mercer kill nine people on a killing spree at Umpqua Community College Oct. 1. in which Mercer asked students if they were Christians before shooting them.
